Senses / Sentidos / 2009
The Five Senses is a five canvas panel, site-specific installation created for the “What’s Love got to do with it” show in Columbia, SC in 2009. The pieces are a reflection on masculinity, beauty patterns and sensuality. Each one of the paintings is designed based on playing cards, depicting on each corner of the paintings the different cultural influences of the male stereotype in the Southern United States;
For instance each piece includes Roman numerals as well as Mayan numbers. When the panels are installed together, the curious viewer will be able to read the phrase “MAKES SENSE” on the upper and lower corners of each painting. Each piece also has the culturally-imposed Italian-renaissance eight-heads pattern of beauty, which still seems to be valid in the 21st Century. Depicted males are not only from different races, but also show interest in their own bodies, smelling, pinching and wearing or holding symbols of sensuality. English and Spanish are also used to name each piece.
Each piece: 4 feet by 6 feet. Entire installation: 20 feet by 6 feet. (Available) Acrylic and charcoal on canvas (Signed posters available)
